Rheem Heat Pump reduces energy costs of ageing boilers

Set in tropical surrounds, Rydges Esplanade in Cairns, Far North Queensland is a 4-star resort with three pools, tennis courts and a health and fitness centre, all with stunning sea views. But with two ageing gas powered Heatmate boilers and rapidly increasing energy bills, it was time to find a new, more efficient water heating solution.

Working with PlumbNorth in Cairns, Rheem installed a Rheem Commercial Heat Pump and two 1000-litre stainless steel storage tanks to extend the life of the existing plant and also reduce the hotel’s energy consumption.

The new Heat Pump plant now acts as preheat to the two existing Heatmate boilers. It also provides a much-needed insurance against the failure of the existing system. Additional Heat Pumps and tanks can be installed at a later date as the Heatmate boilers’ service life ends.

“For every 1kW of electrical energy used to operate the Heat Pump, the system can extract 4kW of heat energy out of the surrounding air to heat water,” explains Anthony Van Brunschot, Technical Sales Manager QLD.

“This produces a co-efficient of performance (CoP) of 4:1 saving the hotel 4kW for every kilowatt of input.”

The new system now provides up to 2000 litres of hot water at a 45°C rise in the peak period and a recovery period of 6 hours between peaks (based on a winter average ambient temperature of 25°C), with the heat pump providing 351 litres recovery per hour.
