Heat pump the ideal solution for landmark refurb

When it came to upgrading an old Rheem Heavy Duty Gas Plant in an A-Grade Sydney CBD building, high efficiency was a must. Which meant a Rheem Commercial heat pump system was an obvious choice.

Built in 1986, 255 George Street underwent the hot water system upgrade in late 2014. Following a detailed technical assessment by Rheem Commercial, two plants (each occupying one of two plant rooms) were installed to serve the base building amenities, such as kitchenettes, showers and hand basins.

Each plant room serves a different zone within the building. The Zone 1 plant on level 16 serves 2240 occupants on levels 1 to 16, while the Zone 2 plant on level 30 accommodates the needs of 1540 people on levels 17 to 27. In the case of the level 30 plant room, space restrictions meant that the heat pump had to be located in a separate room to the tanks.

“The client has always specified the need for a high-efficiency hot water plant, and with existing constraints in the plant room precluding high efficiency gas, the heat pump was an obvious choice for the upgrade,” says Josh Elliott, Rheem’s Commercial Sales Manager for NSW and the ACT. “The tricky size restrictions in one of the plant rooms also meant that the flexibility of our heat pump system was able to come into its own.”

The 30-storey building has a 5 Star Energy Rating and a 5 Star Green building rating.
